Data Scientist

Data and Analytics 

Providing a host of data products and services, Data and Analytics drive better decision-making and improved customer services. Our data scientists use machine learning, analytics and tools help our customers in all kinds of ways – from improving their journeys and providing useful information, through to delivering refunds when things go wrong, and enhancing our operational services and planning. 

Our data scientists collaborate with teams from across TfL with the aim to make the best of our available data using data mining and advanced statistical analysis techniques and tools 

Job Purpose:

You will develop and deliver new intelligent data analysis and exploitation capabilities to drive continuous improvement across TfL. Through the use of exploratory and hypothesis driven analysis they will seek to unlock new insight from our vast datasets 

Using deep learning and machine learning techniques they will deliver data driven intelligence to support business questions in response to key strategic operational and planning questions. 

These questions help inform, across all of TfL, both long term strategic planning questions based on analysis of TfL’s large and historic data sets and short term operational questions. 

Key Accountabilities: 

• Create new tools and algorithms based on sophisticated analyses of customer travel patterns and transport operations by analysing customer and operational data sets such as ticketing and payments data, asset data, and signalling data. Discover value from vast amounts of data to enable transport operations and planning to make smarter decisions. 

• Integrate datasets and perform analyses spanning two or more of these existing data sets to generate new insights that span multiple TfL services. Using a data analytics approach, develop a set of data analysis methods and algorithms which can be implemented by the Data & Analytics team and subsequently offered to key managers within TfL and external partner organisations on a managed-service basis. 

• Gain maximum value for money from the data sets held by TfL (and datasets external to TfL) to improve operations, planning and marketing. Gain efficiencies from identifying and delivering savings from analysis for business areas through the use of data. 

• The post holder will be expected to support the Principal Data Scientist to develop and test the analytic methodologies for tools which provide business intelligence from large TfL data sets 

• The post holder will also develop and test the methodologies created by the Principal Data Scientist and research partners on developing customer profiling based on customer travel patterns, so that TfL has rich information on behavioural patterns and passenger types that up until now are only available by manually surveying customers. 

Knowledge: 

• Detailed knowledge of data analytics and statistical analysis tools (e.g. SAS, SPSS, Toad, R, Python) (Essential); 

• Knowledge of data analytics tools and methodologies including: predictive data modelling and statistical analysis, quantitative and qualitative analysis tools. 

• Proven knowledge of how to use data to answer business questions that drive insight. 

• Proven knowledge of how to scope solutions that support data science exploration. 

• Knowledge of London’s public transport industry; 

• Knowledge of relevant national and international legislation pertaining to the Government/Public Sector IT, including knowledge of basic confidentiality and data protection requirements that apply to the processing of customer information. 

Skills: 

• Ability to analyse complex data consisting of millions of rows and draw conclusions using new analytic approaches (Essential)

• Strong experience of gathering, collating, analysing and publishing data in multi – media formats, for both technical and non-technical audiences; 

• Significant experience in a technical analytic background, such as: econometrics, economic or statistical analysis, business intelligence, information management, relational dataset design and development, or data mining.

Join us, and you could be responsible for leading the development of TfL’s ticketing and revenue systems across one or more Scrum Teams. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the teams are using good practices such as Peer Reviews, TDD, CI & CD to deliver software that’s used by millions of Londoners every day. In order to be successful, you’ll be an expert in either Full Stack / Back-office / Financial Systems Development with proven experience of working on large scale systems in a high throughput, agile environment.

Senior Data Architect

Data and Analytics

Job Purpose:

In order for TfL to make sense of the data sets held within the organisation and convert those data sets into working formats to be presented to the business, there is a need to model the data we have to ensure we are using the correct data sources and understand how they effectively join together.

You will form part of the development streams and are accountable for the creation and maintenance of conceptual, physical and logical data models.

Key Accountabilities:

–  You will build models to the standards in both process and documentation.

–  You will build and maintain data models within the model repository

–  You will craft Physical and Logical data models in line with the Conceptual model.

–  Generating the Data Definition Language (DDL) used to create/amend the database schema for each environment it will be implemented into.

–  The migration of legacy data models into the target model, including importing existing data models from new sources to generate a data model.

–  You will be liable for the database standards in terms of naming conventions and schema design within models produced.

–  You will ensure the physical models produced by the data modellers are aligned and support the needs of the business in regard to performance, data quality and simplicity.

–  You will produce data modelling artefacts as agreed in the delivery framework to the required quality standards

–  You will facilitate data modelling sessions with senior level business owners to create the data model for new or enhanced data sets.

–  You will create project logical model during the requirements analysis phase, and ensuring any changes to the conceptual, logical or physical models as part of a project are captured and the significant models updated.

Knowledge:

– Understand Business Intelligence, Data warehousing, Data modelling and taking care of big data

–  Understand star schema structure & design, understanding of Kimball & Inmon data warehouse design

–  Understand Agile development approach

–  Understand principles and practical steps to implement master data management

–  A degree in a significant technology/computer science subject or equivalent technical qualification

The role you’ll play

As Cloud Engineer – Azure, you’ll play a vital role in delivering TfL’s automation strategy. Working closely with skilled development teams, you’ll facilitate and unlock their sprints. In our fast-paced and innovative environment, you’ll also work closely with the networks and hosting team. Together, you will build their automated public and private cloud capability.

What we’re looking for

You’ll bring to the role a proven track record of hands-on automation in cloud PaaS and IaaS components, in either Microsoft Azure or AWS. A good understanding of cloud virtualisation is essential, as is experience of administration within the Windows Server or Red Hat stack. Demonstrable cloud skills in PowerShell or BASH scripting are important too, too. Ideally, you’ll also have skills in Visual Studio, Chef or Puppet, and System Centre 2012 or Red Hat Satellite.
