Agile Development Lead
London’s population is set to hit the 10 million mark by 2030. Keeping them, and the millions more who visit the capital each year, moving however, will be key if the city is to remain a world-class destination. That’s why, at Transport for London, we’re already using cutting edge smart tech, network connectivity and big data to ensure we meet the challenges of the future head on. We’re calling it Project 2030 – and you could play your part in it.
You’ll influence the lives of millions
Join us, and you could be responsible for leading the development of TfL’s ticketing and revenue systems across one or more Scrum Teams. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the teams are using good practices such as Peer Reviews, TDD, CI & CD to deliver software that’s used by millions of Londoners every day. We’ll rely on you to develop very high throughput back office applications deployed on the Microsoft stack and Azure.
You’ll have the opportunity to work with your peers to ensure that TfL is using the right technologies and you’ll be responsible for managing and mentoring between 5 and 10 other developers.
You’ll be involved in activities such as Refinement, Sprint Planning, Estimates, Retrospectives, Demos and the Daily Scrum. You’ll also work with other Scrum teams using Large Scale Scrum to produce coordinated and integrated high-quality working software.
In order to be successful, you’ll be an expert in either Full Stack / Back-office / Financial Systems Development with proven experience of working on large scale systems in a high throughput, agile environment.
You’ll get to use every bit of your expertise
Constantly looking for better ways to develop and deliver software, you’re highly focused, resilient and a real source of inspiration for others. You’re passionate about clean code and modern architecture design and have a production-first DevOps attitude.
You have an excellent knowledge of Scrum and Agile and the Microsoft Development toolset; C#, .NET, SQL Server and Windows Server 2008R2/2012. Experience developing high volume systems handling thousands of transactions per second are must haves. Experience of using Azure or AWS is desirable.
You’ll have experience leading and managing other Developers. And, if you can bring excellent communication skills and a flair for analysing complex systems and coming up with effective solutions to problems, you’re definitely someone we’d like to talk to.
We’ll reward your expertise and achievements
In return for your expertise, along with being excited at the thought of being able to help make London the ultimate technologically smart city, we can offer an excellent benefits package including final salary pension scheme and a generous holiday entitlement of 30 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays and flexible working. You can make significant savings on travel thanks to a free Oyster Card travel pass; 75% discount on national rail season ticket and interest free loan; and discounted travel on the Eurostar. You can also choose to take advantage of a discounted private healthcare scheme, tax-efficient childcare payments, and a host of retail, health, leisure and travel offers.

Join the Technology & Data community at Transport for London (TfL) and you’ll help to shape the future of world-class transport in the greatest global city. By 2030, 10 million people will live in London. Millions more will continue to visit. TfL keeps our amazing city moving, working and growing. But the challenge has never been bigger. Or more exciting. We’re already operating at the leading edge of tech and data. Every year, we invest in technology and now, we want to invest in you. Together, we’ll do the extraordinary.
What we can achieve
Get ready for an incredible journey – of discovery, of development, of achievement. We will push the boundaries of what tech and data can do. To understand where we’re going, let’s look at where we are today. Trains are more frequent and road journeys smoother thanks to advances in modern signalling tech. Customer experiences are being transformed by real-time information, via the groundbreaking iBus location system. And our pioneering work in contactless has made us the leaders of e-ticketing in transport. That’s not all. Mobile devices, virtual reality, Big Data – all these things and more are driving the evolution of what’s possible. Are you ready to play a part?
The role you’ll play
As Cloud Engineer – Azure, you’ll play a vital role in delivering TfL’s automation strategy. Working closely with skilled development teams, you’ll facilitate and unlock their sprints. In our fast-paced and innovative environment, you’ll also work closely with the networks and hosting team. Together, you will build their automated public and private cloud capability.
What we’re looking for
You’ll bring to the role a proven track record of hands-on automation in cloud PaaS and IaaS components, in either Microsoft Azure or AWS. A good understanding of cloud virtualisation is essential, as is experience of administration within the Windows Server or Red Hat stack. Demonstrable cloud skills in PowerShell or BASH scripting are important too, too. Ideally, you’ll also have skills in Visual Studio, Chef or Puppet, and System Centre 2012 or Red Hat Satellite.
The rewards you’ll enjoy
The benefits are as impressive as the opportunity. Build your career at Transport for London and you can look forward to a final salary pension. From day one, you can enjoy free travel on the TfL network, 75% off a National Rail Season Ticket (and an interest free loan) and discounted Eurostar travel. There’s a tax-efficient cycle-to-work programme too. With 30 days annual leave plus public and bank holidays, you can make your leisure time as exciting as your work. What’s more, you can choose to take advantage of a host of other benefits spanning childcare, private healthcare, retail discounts and more. Ideal advantages for a role that’s all about making sure the future looks great.
