Agile Development Lead

Join us, and you could be responsible for leading the development of TfL’s ticketing and revenue systems across one or more Scrum Teams. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the teams are using good practices such as Peer Reviews, TDD, CI & CD to deliver software that’s used by millions of Londoners every day. We’ll rely on you to develop very high throughput back office applications deployed on the Microsoft stack and Azure.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with your peers to ensure that TfL is using the right technologies and you’ll be responsible for managing and mentoring between 5 and 10 other developers.

You’ll be involved in activities such as Refinement, Sprint Planning, Estimates, Retrospectives, Demos and the Daily Scrum. You’ll also work with other Scrum teams using Large Scale Scrum to produce coordinated and integrated high-quality working software.

In order to be successful, you’ll be an expert in either Full Stack / Back-office / Financial Systems Development with proven experience of working on large scale systems in a high throughput, agile environment.

As Cloud Engineer – Azure, you’ll play a vital role in delivering TfL’s automation strategy. Working closely with skilled development teams, you’ll facilitate and unlock their sprints. You’ll bring to the role a proven track record of hands-on automation in cloud PaaS and IaaS components, in either Microsoft Azure or AWS. BI Development Lead

Data and Analytics

Data & Analytics ensures that TfL can make best use of its data, through developing and maintaining a wide range of data products ranging from self-serve business intelligence to high volume data science platforms. TfL manages one of the largest urban transport networks in the world, and data powers this network. Each day we collect a high volume of data from a variety of sources, including bus, tube and tram journeys, traffic sensors, detectors on vehicles and many more. We use a mixed architecture, using both traditional data warehousing and data lake technologies, to help TfL turn this data into actionable insight, which is key to running our world-class transport services.

Some examples of the current products that are being developed include: using WiFi data to help us to manage our underground network, by helping us understand overcrowding and the routes that customers take through our stations better as we can determine route choice of our customers; using sensors on buses to identify where buses are speeding across the network so that we can target campaigns to reduce these incidents happening; Finally we are also looking at revenue leakage on our network, building a tool that can help to target stations where customers are not correctly taping in / out.

The team are a mature agile development team who are driving to deliver better products quicker for our colleagues, with MVPs and iterations being the key. There are also flexible working opportunities within TfL to support people in their work life balance.

Job Purpose:

The post holder will have responsibility for the successful development of dynamic, powerful visual analytics and reporting that help support evidence based business and operational decision making.
Forming part of a scrum agile team, the Lead Data Visualisation Developer will develop to specification, unit test and implement new reports, dashboards and applications with rich interactive graphics, data visualisations and charting.

Key Accountabilities:

1) To undertake the maintenance of existing and development of new visual analytics, reports and applications in line with the strategy set by the Chief Data Officer
2) To develop powerful visual analytics and reporting using industry best practice so that each solution delivered is performant, meets business requirements and definitions, conforms to Data & Analytics design specifications and has the controls and checks in place to satisfy audit/finance guidelines. To document the technical design of developed components in accordance with Data & Analytics standards
3) To develop to estimated timelines or update management of deviations to these estimates. To raise critical technical issues to the Development Stream Lead/Technical Delivery Manager that may impact on the timeline.
4) Working with their scrum agile team members, to undertake and support unit and regression testing of visual analytics and reporting to ensure it can be delivered and meets business/operational requirements and can be run in a system testing environment.
5) To undertake fixes, where necessary. To undertake performance tuning where required.
6) To participate and contribute fully in quality assurance design walk-throughs of developed technical components with colleagues in the Analytics Development and Delivery team. When faced with business scenarios which do not fit a standard approach, to collaboratively work through each issue with peers to ensure that the solution meets business/operational requirements and the principles of best practice.
7) To ensure that TfL’s policy on privacy and data protection is adhered to in the design of all solutions. That access to data is controlled, that personal data is stored securely and is anonymised in accordance with best practice guidelines.
8) To provide, where appropriate, user access to Technology & Data information; and to give advice on information and databases, including training and familiarisation with revenue collection and other performance, operational or customer experience data.

Knowledge:

– Strong technical knowledge for implementing visualisations/reporting using industry leading visualisation tools/toolkits and reporting software and proven interest in the latest and emerging technologies

Senior Data Visualisation Developer

Data & Analytics

Providing a host of data products and services, the Data & Analytics team in TfL drive better decision-making and improved customer services. Our data scientists and development teams create analytical products and tools that help customers in all kinds of ways – from improving their journeys and providing useful information, through to delivering refunds when things go wrong, and enhancing our operational services and planning.

Job Purpose:

Forming part of the Prototyping development team within Data & Analytics, the Senior Data Visualisation Developer will work alongside data scientists and business stakeholders to create rich visualisations, providing insight and trusted information in a form that is easy to consume and explore.

The Prototyping team, in support of the pan-TfL commitment to reduce revenue leakage and fare evasion on the network, has built and is continuing to develop a detection platform (ITAP) which identifies fare evasion from patterns in data. As part of this team, the role holder will be required to build interactive visualisations using insight from ITAP and a range of newly integrated data sets to support ongoing initiatives to improve the detection of fare evasion, to optimise the deployment of operational resources and to provide an evaluation of the cost/benefit of variety of existing and planned interventions.

These new visualisations will evolve iteratively, starting as a working prototype, with changing content, functionality, design and style based on user feedback until ready to promote into a production service.

Key Accountabilities:

– To develop well designed and easy to interpret visualisation prototypes using industry standard methodology so that each solution delivered is performant, meets business requirements and definitions, and has the controls and checks in place to satisfy audit/finance guidelines.

– To develop to estimated timelines or update management of deviations to these estimates. To raise critical technical issues to the Senior Product Owner or Data Prototyping Manager that may impact on the timeline

– Where required, to undertake and support unit and regression testing to ensure it can be delivered and meets business/operational requirements and can be run in a system testing environment.

What you’ll be doing

The Development Stream Lead will be responsible for the maintenance and development of Data, ETL and front-end solutions to deliver the pan-TfL Technology and Data Strategy. You will lead a team of skilled Developers (ETL and Front End) and BI Testers in providing business critical data, ranging from the usage of the Contactless and Oyster card revenue collection systems to the train telemetry data, thus delivering a range of assigned projects from development through to operational release.

What you need to know

We are looking for people who share our passion for big data and technology. You will have previous experience gained from within the IT industry as a BI Developer for a large scale data warehouse system; ideally developing support queries on databases that contain financial or customer information.

You will be a natural leader with experience of motivating a team whilst dealing with conflicting demands and requirements to budget and plan. You will also be a skilled communicator who can clearly convey information to a wide audience that includes non-technical stakeholders.
